cadiz
During Mara’s visit, we had to make it to Spain for her first time. Thankfully, she is the best and understood how chaotic life had been for me with my move and travels thus far, so we decided to fly by the seat of our pants with this quick trip during the week.
We didn’t have anything booked; we just knew we’d drive somewhere close that was new for both of us. And we’d take Ms. Pipoca to make life easier. We landed on Cadiz because its ~3 hours drive, and on the water. Simple enough, right?
Well, we hadn’t quite thought through traveling in the middle of summer, without reservations, a dog, and in a rental car across country lines. Before you say anything, yes, I’m still renting a car month by month, and yes, it’s Europe, but there are still rental car rules.
In Huelva, we realized we couldn’t drive beyond 150km from the Portuguese border in my car.
Landed on swapping rental cars at the Seville airport… lol. So much for simple, eh?
Alas, we made it to Cadiz, which turns out to be THE oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe. Translates to SUPER small roads. We ditched the rental car in a garage and set off on foot.
Cadiz feels like a combo of both Seville and Barcelona - on the water, but a smaller city. It was adorable, and the people were SUPER friendly. Most tourists were Spanish, so I didn’t feel overrun like some other areas.
The first few hotels were fully booked, and it was a genuine surprise when we ended up in a four-story watch tower and a 360-degree view of the city. MAGICAL.
While working remote offers a TON of flexibility, managing meetings and work while traveling is also SUPER exhausting. Thankfully we could have some super lazy exploration days, and some sandy beach days with meetings hah.
I’ll definitely be back again with Renan and friends!
